In which year did the Brexit referendum take place?

This question tests your memory of when the Brexit referendum actually happened. The public vote on whether the United Kingdom should remain in or leave the European Union took place on 23 June 2016, so the correct year is 2016. It’s a common point of confusion to mix up the announcement or start of the process with the referendum itself, but the vote occurred in 2016, even though the decision to hold a referendum was made earlier and negotiations followed after.
