What is the function of the National Security Council in the UK?

The function being tested is how the National Security Council operates as a high-level coordinating body for security and foreign policy across the government. It brings together key departments—foreign affairs, defence, the interior, and other senior officials—and makes sure decisions on national security are aligned across Whitehall. Because the Prime Minister chairs it and includes senior ministers and officials, the NSC can direct policy, assess threats, and coordinate responses to international crises in a unified way rather than leaving ministries to act in isolation. Other options describe tasks handled by different institutions: budgeting and tax policy sits with the Treasury, deciding parliamentary committee schedules is a parliamentary function, and managing civil service HR policies is within civil service governance and the Cabinet Office.
