What is the purpose of Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) in UK politics?

PMQs tests the idea of accountability and scrutiny in a real, direct way. In the House of Commons, MPs have a regular, scheduled chance to question the Prime Minister, challenging recent policy choices, actions, and statements. This direct questioning makes the PM defend and explain government decisions in front of Parliament and the public, reinforcing transparency and political responsibility. The session is known for its brisk, sometimes combative exchanges, but its core aim is to keep the government answerable to MPs and, through them, to the public. The other options describe different parliamentary processes: approving the annual budget is done through a budget vote, not a questioning session; appointing the Speaker is a separate procedure for choosing the chair of the Commons; ministers resigning publicly can happen for various reasons but isn’t the defined purpose of PMQs.
